An island in the northern Atlantic Ocean west of Great Britain. The island was invaded by Celts c. 500b.c. and converted to Christianity by Saint Patrick in the fifth century a.d. It joined Great Britain in 80 but after the Easter Rebellion (9') and a civil war (99-92) the island was split into the independent Irish Free State (now Ireland) and Northern Ireland, which is still allied with Great Britain.
